First things first for course

An Order of St john first aid course run in Waiouru over the week-end was very successful according to instructor Noel Swift. Eight people took part in the Emergency First Aid 10hour course, although about 30 had initially registered interest. Mr Swift said he was disappointed with the numbers and apparent apathy when it came to crunch time, but said because of the low numbers a lot more was able to

be covered than originally intended. The course takes a 'first things first' approach, concentrating on scene appraisal, safety for the first aider and safety for the patient. Subjects covered included basic life support and CPR along with burns and fractures treatment. Epilepsy and diabetes were also touched on, said Mr Swift. A member of the Order of St John for 26 years now, Mr Swift said first aid is something people can take with them anywhere.

"Of all the skills you learn first aid is one of the few you can take with you, at home, on holiday or down the road," he said. People interested in learning first aid can call the Order of St John, Wanganui free phone 0800 909 900 or contact their own local association.
