Waiouru
• On 4 September a break in at Waiouru Primary School was discovered. It is thought the break in happened sometime between 1 and 4 September and an account of what has been taken is expected from teachers who returned to school this week. Waiouru Police Constable Ed Baker said it appears the offenders broke in through one of the main doors at the rear of the Senior Department. Once inside about five doors were forced to gain entry to various offices and cabinets. Fingerprints have been lifted from the scene and enquiries are continuing. • On the night of 4 September a steer was hit by a car on Peters' Hill South of Waiouru. Const Baker said the car involved had bull bars and basically shunted the steer off the road. Three steers were found to be wandering. • On 6 September a car in which Japanese tourists were travelling was hit from behind by another car. The accident happened on State Highway One next to the Andrews Drive turn-off into Waiouru Military Camp. • SH1 was closed at 8pm on 7 September due to snow, with four trucks stranded at the Waikato Stream. At 2am on 8 September SH49 was closed with about 20 trucks not making it up Ohakune Hill coming into Waiouru. Const Baker said grit was laid and the trucks freed, only to get stuck again at Peters' Hill on SH 1 South of Waiouru. The roads were gritted again and closed down until mornihg.
