Health centre services explained
makes it challenging and also most rewarding. Staff are Sonia Robb, Rae Martin and Barbara Dempsey. • Home help: People are employed to provide help and assistance around the home to enable a patient to recover from illness or injury, or a diSabled person. • Midwifery service: The midwives work both in the unit and in the community. In the unit they are responsible for women while they are in labour, their delivery and with the assistance of the unit nurses in the post-natal care until discharge. They are also available to escort maternity clients in the ambulance. In the community they visit maternity clients before and after they have had their babies. Booking in and ante natal group sessions are available at the unit or in your own home. "Being part of the birth of a child is a pri vilege, The midwives enjoy sharing this special moment with the women and their families/whanau," said Mrs Kui. • Child Health Nurse: child health services are provided from the centre. Helen Fahey has been in this position until today, but she has now left "to enjoy a break before the birth of her child". The position has been advertised and will be filled
shortly, said Mrs Kui. • Enid Windle is the centre' s receptionist. She provides clerical assistance to the manager and unit staff. She is also responsible for outpatient clinic preparation, statistical collation, client records and "filing anything and almost everything that is in the 'too hard' basket". • Cook services: Cheryl Garland is the present cook and she will provide meals for in-patients and the meals on wheels clients. • Cleaning services: Denise Pasquill will be the cleaner for the new unit and she says having a new building to work in will be a welcome change. "I will have the pleasure of managing the new unit. It is not often in one's career that you are gi ven the opportunity to take part in the design and building of a new health centre and it has certainly been an experience for me, one I will most certainly not forget. "The staff have been great throughout this long task and have supported me all the way . It hasn' t been easy to make the changes and say goodbye to friends and colleagues but we are all positive and looking forward to the challenges ahead," concluded Mrs Kui.
