Lodge plan approved

A resource consent for a ski lodge on Mangawhero Terrace, next to the Powerhaus (the old power station), has been granted by the Ruapehu District Council hearings committee. The application was to erect a split level lodge building in three sections following the contour of the land. On the lowest level of the building there is to be a lounge/living area with kitchen, dining room, changing room, laundry and ablution facilities on the next level. On the upper level there would be ten bedrooms — fi ve large bedrooms with balconies and five smaller bedrooms, providing a facility for up to thirty people. A number of objections/ submissions were made regarding the application with some calling for modifications to the plan.

Applicant Bob Morton told the hearing the lodge was primarily for the shareholders but that they would take in paying clients. He agreed with some of the suggested changes, including changing the car park layout so that cars could leave the site in a forward gear. The original plan would have meant cars would have had to reverse into Mangawhero Terrace. Mr Morton was asked whether it would be possible for a bus load of 30 people to come to the lodge without one of the partners being present. He said there
