• The driver and 28 passengers of a North bound Greyhound bus had a narrow escape after the bus lost its right front tyre while on its way to Ohakune via the Parapara highway on Friday. The accident occurred approximately 15km south of Raetihi shortly after 8am. Constable lan Harrison of the Ohakune Police who attended the incident said it was the quick thinking of the driver that saved the group from serious injury. Constable Harrison said the driver had the presence of mind to reduce speed and stop the bus by changing down gears, rather than applying the brakes. "It was extremely fortunate that she (the driver) had excellent driving skills," he said. The bus was carrying 28 pupils and three adults from Sacred Heart College in Wanganui who were attending a competition at Ruapehu College. The passengers were transported the remainder of the journey by Dempsey Buses of Raetihi. A replacement Greyhound bus from Wanganui made the journey up the Parapara to uplift the group later in the day. • Ohakune Police attended a burglary of a Railway Row, Ohakune, holiday residence on 24 June 1995. Stolen from the residence was a Sanyo mini stereo system, assorted compact discs, and clothing, together valued at over $1000. An occupant of the house was at home at the time of the offence. Police said the offender took selected items before leaving via the back door. Police enquiries are continuing.
