Ruapehu scholars

John Martin Battersby, 26, born and raised in the Waimarino, recently graduated a Doctor of Philosophy from Massey University. His thesis was in history, commissioned by the Crown Law Office where he now works as an historian in Wellington, on New Zealand' s relationship with the United Nations 19451960. It "provided an alternative analysis to the orthodox view that the United Nations became largely irrelevant to New Zealand policy soon after the Second World War," according to Massey University's graduation programme. His mother, Dorothy Battersby of Rangataua, said the family were told he had finished his doctorate five months less than the previous record time for Massey, havingbeen given a short deadline by the Crown Law Office. Dr Battersby was educated at Ohakune Convent School, then Ohakune Primary School and Francis Douglas Memorial College in New Plymouth. Vannessa Wilson Vanessa Wilson of Ohakune recently completed a four-year bachelor of Management Studies degree at the University of Waikato, majoring in accounting and finance. She is now working for the Ford Motors company head office in the corporate accounting division in Manukau City. She completed her secondary schooling at Ruapehu College in 1 990 when she was head girl.

FOOTNOTE: Information about other ex-Ruapehu College pupils' graduation has been promised by the College and is expected soon. Information about other exWaimarino scholars is also welcome for publication.
