Free dog registration this month
The Ruapehu District Council is conducting an amnesty this month which allows owners of unregistered dogs register their dogs at no cost. The free registration applies to the current 94/95 year and not to the ensuing year which commences on 1 July 1995. This is the first time that Council has held such an amnesty and they hope that owners of unregistered dogs will take the opportunity to register their animals without fear of incurring penalties. Failing to register a dog is an offence under the Dog Control and Hydatids Act 1982 for which a person may be prosecuted and iipon summary conviction receive a fine of up to $500. Once the proposed Dog Control Bill becomes law and repeals existing legislation, the fine for failing to register a dog will increase to a maximum of $1500. Owners who are presently being prosecuted by Council for failing to register their dogs are not eligible for the amnesty which ends on Wednesday 31 May 1995.
