Waiouru booms louder than usual
Atmospheric conditions contributed to the louder than normal training fire heard last Wednesday in Waiouru. Residents were rocked by 105 millimetre rounds being fired throughout the day by 1 6 Field Regiment taking part in exercise Top Travis. Army logistics officer Captain Phil Hughes said the firing was in normal zones and normal directions, but thick low cloud made the explosions seem closer. Also on
Wednesday Scorpion tanks fired four 76 millimetre blank rounds in camp as part of the Commanding Officer's farewell parade held by Queen Alexandra' s Mounted Rifles. Earlier in the week Waiouru residents were awoken around 1 0.30pm with the firing of two 76 millimetre blank rounds on Hamilton field. QAMR were again the culprits, farewelling Lieutenant Colonel Neville Reilly during a dinner.
