The Weekly back then

Sixteen years ago this month the local paper of the time, the Waimarino Weekly, ran stories on parenting skills, big tomatoes and rugby. On page two "Thursday's Child" wrote:"This is 1978 — the world is changing, we may be in a state of future shock" Thursday's Child wrote in regard to a meeting of parents of teenagers, discussing how to care for them. On page three of the four-page paper was a picture of Korina Hawira holding a one pound eight ounce tomato grown by Mrs Edna McLean. On the same page was coverage of the "local derby" of Raetihi against Ohakune on the Rugby field. Ohakune won 24-21. Excellent conditions could have seen the game go either way, reported Bob Luxford but Raetihi' s "yours old chap" attitude to the high ball let Ohakune off the hook. He said Andrew Donald "made some mistakes not expected of a player with first class experience", although he also said Ohakune's strength was the trio of Andy, Luke Albert and Pene Wilson. Also in print in the Weekly in April 1978 were stories on • Plans for a recreation and culture centre in Raetihi. • A call for somewhere safe for skateboarders to ride. • $300 for the Waimarino Hosptial day room fund.
