Board looks at intersection safety
The W aiouru Community Board met for the first time this year Monday night last week to discuss traffic safety, water, and a ditch. Board members presented Antony Andradi , Roading Asset Manager for the Ruapehu District Council (RDC), with a suggested plan for improvements to the SH 1 and SH49 intersection. The board expressedits ongoing concerns at the number of accidents involving injury and death at the intersection. They have drafted a sketch of a road layout that they believe would make it safer. The
plan would require the approval of Transit New Zealand as a state highway is involved and TNZ fund all safety improvements for roading. Mr Andradi said he would inspect the intersection in daylight hours and get back to the board with his conclusions and recommendations. Water costs The proposed increase to the water supply and drainage separate rate accounts will be discussed fully at a community board workshop to be held TURNTOPAGE2

FROMPAGEl soon. It was proposed that a submission for the 1995/96 annual plan be put forward after the workshop. Board member Murray Fitchett asked how council could justify an increase to the rate when both accounts are in credit. ($8000 and $23 000 respectively for the drainage and water supply accounts.) Mr Fitchett also expressed concern over in-
terest being paid on a loan, and why a loan was obtained when the accounts are in credii. The board repeated its request for previous figures on money spent in these accounts dating back to 1 989 (the hand-o ver from Rangitikei council) , so the fluctuation can be gauged and a submission put forward. Erik Lei, RDC Finance Manager, said he would provide these figures.
Submission priority The board was repeatedly asked to decide on the priority of submissions for the 1 995/96 draft annual by Mr Lei. Three times the board
declined to prioritise, saying copies of the draft annual plan had not been received. They decided submissions would be placed in priority order at the proposed workshop. Completed submissions must reach the council by no later than 12 May 1995. Drain pain The Ngauruhoe Street East stormwater drain work is to be re-planned and re-
evaluated. Don Sattler, area engineer south for the RDC, asked the board if they would consider some other type of fill besides piping. The board had no objections. Mr Sattler said alternative options were relatively cheap. "If we were back in the $5000 bracket, you could most certainly be back for this financial year," he said. "It will be done," said Mr
Lei. The board has had this drain on its list of submissions for some years. In the 1994/95 annual plan they listed it as the number one priority. Shape corrected The Waiouru shape correction work has been carried out on the service lanes off SH1. The community board inspected the work on 13 March and found it
unsatisfactory. Contractors have since returned to remove a number of 'humps and bumps' and large amounts of excess hotmix in the kerb and channel. Mr Sattler said the contract was still in the maintenance period and an inspection would be carried out after this time. He said the job must be up to standard before being signed off as completed.
