Carrot capital
Not being one of the greatest fans of our kitsch carrot, I must concede that our "erection" (as Inside New Zealand described it) on the eastern entrance to the town did us proud last week. The programme about small towns putting themselves on the map was a real boost to Ohakune, showing the town in a fun and favourable light. Some of the other towns shown on the programme were just at the start on the road to making themselves known, while Ohakune was clearly saying "we have arrived". The Big Carrot' s birthday was made to look like the fun, community event that most will remember. It appeared as a relaxed, friendly event that the locals enjoyed while making visitors feel very welcome and a part of the fun. Too often television programmes such as this can be patronising and cynically sniggering at small towns. But not with Inside New Zealand - thanks guys. To the folk who put such a lot of hard work into last year's Carrot Birthday, well done! Same again this year?
