Quakes

An earthquake felt about 7.44am on Thursday was initially measured at 5.9 on the Richter scale. The quake was felt as a strong rumble and swaying motion and lasted for about 30 seconds. It was centred about 75km deep in the north of the Malborough Sounds and was felt as far away as Dargaville in the north and Dunedin in the south. The two tremors felt as sharp jolts at 6.06am and 9.05am on Friday 17 March were very local as they were not recorded by the Siesmological Observatory in Wellington. It is believed they were due to plate movement and not volcanic in nature.
