Ohakune to to feature in TV series
Ohakune is to feature in a new television series next month — "Putting Our Town On The Map", to screen on Wednesday 12 April on TV3 at 8.30pm. "Maintaining a sense of local identity is not easy in an age when everything is getting more global," states the publicity material on the programme. In the programme (in TV3's Inside New Zealand series), presenter Miranda Harcourt takes a journey round the country to explore the imaginative ways in which towns are giving themselves a unique image. "Some towns have a real flair for getting themselves noticed and talked about," continues the press release. The focus is on nine towns: Paeroa, Ohakune, Te Puke, Katikati, Cromwell, Alexandra, Gore, Rakaia, and Kaikoura. In particular, the documentary looks at the trend towards building large objects as a highly visual way to represent the town. In the case of some towns, the documentary focuses on annual festivals. "Putting Our Town On The Map" was directed by Shirley Horrocks who also worked with Miranda Harcourt on the award-winning programme "Act of Murder". It was filmed by Leon Narbey , who won the top award for camera work in last year's Film and Television Awards. Presenter Miranda Harcourt, well-known for her role in the television series "Gloss" and the prison play "Verbatim," lives in Wellington but has spent a large part of hei acting life on the road with plays. During these tours she has come to develop a strong interest in the festivals anc arts activities happening in towns all round the country.
