The Queen Elizabeth II Army Memorial Museum will hold the official opening of The Kippenberger Pavilion and the 'Tears on Greenstone' memorial this Friday. The museum will be open to the general public from 911am and 2-4.30pm. Casual visitors are encouraged to attend the opening at 1 2 noon said museum director Major Richard Taylor. No admiss'ion fee will be charged on that day. The pavilion will be opened by Mary Weston, MajorGeneral Sir Howard Kippenberger' s daughter from London. Sir Howard' s son Jeremy will also travel from Wellington to attend the ceremony. Sir Howard was bom in 1 897, served in two world wars, was editor-in-chief of the New Zealand Official War Histories and Dominion President of the Returned Services Association for seven years. He died in 1957 at the comparatively young age of 60, apparently from complications from injuries he suffered when he stood on an antipersonnel mine during the Battle of Cassino in 1944. 'Tears on Greenstone' is, according to jade experts, the largest greenstone structure in the world. It is a memorial to the over 30,000 New Zealand service men and women that gave their lives in war.
