St John's seeks support

The Order of St John is seeking support from the community for its work in the Waimarino. St John's will be holding a public meeting in Ohakune on Monday, 27 March, 1 995 at 7.30pm with a view to setting up a local - committee. The local structure of the Order of St John is based on an area committee which is made up of elected and appointed members. The role of the area committee is to co-ordinate St John activi-

ties in the area and support the activities by representation on committees, carrying out administration, providing housing for the groups to meet and operate from and raising funds to support the work of St John. In the past St John had a very active group of community service (Brigade) members who were easily recognised in their black and white uniforms. This group was originally formed as the Ohakune Railway division and con-

sisted of employees of the Railway. George Murdie of Ohakune was the leader of this group for many years and George and his fellow members were very active in providing first aid cover for sporting events and other community occasions. Although there has been no official St John presence in the Waimarino over the last few years, Noel Le Noel

and Claude Berry have continued the St John tradition particularly with providing first aid cover for the rugby . The ambulance service in Waimarino has been operated by the order of St John since 1 April, 1994 and Jenny Dekker of the Waimarino Health Watch Committee has been representing the views of the community at ambulance district meetings. Jenny

wishes to be relieved of this responsibility and hand it over to an area committee chairperson or their representative. Those interested in the work of St John or who have questions can attend the meeting which will be chaired by Ruapehu mayor Carrick Workman. More stories re:St John's P14
