Bicycle races and rides for all comers
The main cycle event in the Ohakune Carnival of Wheels, scheduled for 25 & 26 March is the open Round Ruapehu Classic, the "richest single stage bike race in New Zealand",
which will see hundreds of serious cyclists head off around the mountains from outside Ohakune Hotel at 10am on Saturday 25 March. This race has prizes adding up to $4000 plus
available. Starting at 12.15, also from Ohakune Hotel, is the Ohakune Motelliers' Novice Classic, a 30km race that takes in Raetihi, V alley Road and Tohunga Road.
And for anybody with the will and a bike, there is the Winstone Pulp International Fun Ride, a 40km recreational ride starting at 10.05am on the Saturday — soon after the serious racers have left town. The ride circles Ohakune, heads
for Raetihi via Lakes Road, then along V alley Road and back to Ohakune well in time (for most!) to see the finish of the Round Ruapehu Classic. For the $20 entry fee riders will receive an official ride pack, a finishing certificate and a com-
plimentary meal and also go in a draw for several spot prizes. All the profits from thi s event go to the Ohakune Primary School. On the Sunday the racers will compete in the Powderkeg Chateau Criterium races, on an 800m circuit.
Registration forms for the races and the. fun ride are available from the Ruapehu Visitor Centre or by contacting the Mainstreet Coordinator Sue Allomes on 06-385-8799, or at the Ruapehu Bulletin Office, 06-385-8532.
