Police say burglars are locals

Although the number of reported burglaries in the Ohakune-Raetihi areas has dropped over the past four years, the burglary rate is still too high for a small area, said Detective Constable Mike Hill. Waimarino Police believe that a majority of the burglaries are committed by groups living within the community, and they will be actively targeting these property offenders in order to reduce the number of burglaries. Most property offenders are also involved in other forms of criminal offending, said Mr Hill.

"It is clear that many people are aware of the acti vities of certain property offenders, but for some reason are reluctant to speak with the Police." The Police would like members of the community to assist them in combating these crimes. Examples of assistance sought include: reporting all suspicious activity, reporting activities of known criminals, forming Neighbourhood Watch Groups, reporting alarm activations, accurately recording descriptions of their property such as make, model and serial number.
