Red Cross needs support for preparedness
If New Zealand is to be prepared for a civil defence emergency like the recent earthquake at Kobe, Japan, then groups like Red Cross need to be prepared. The 1 995 Annual Appeal for the New Zealand Red Cross Society takes place
this week, finishing on Sunday 5 March. It is the only appeal for funds that the Red Cross Society has on a national basis and it is this appeal that provides the finances to keep the Red Cross active in New Zealand. Other
appeals that take place during the year are the result of major disasters and involve raising funds for a specific project to relieve human suffering such as the special Rwanda Appeal in 1994. This year the Waimarino Branch will be conducting the Annual Appeal during the week ending 5 March. It is hoped that collectors will call on as many people as possible. However, if a collector does not call or people are not at home when the collector calls, donations can be left at a number of locations in both Raetihi and Ohakune. Special collection boxes will be available for donations. Collection envelopes have been delivered through the post and these may be used for donations. Arty donation over $5 is eligible for a tax deduction.
The Waimarino has alway s been a good supporter of Red Cross. With the major earthquake in Kobe, Japan, and other recent series of earthquakes in New Zealand, everyone must now be aware that this country is vulnerable and could also experience a disaster of this type. Some experts believe that it is only a matter of time before such a natural disaster strikes New Zealand. Should this hap-
pen, organisations such as Red Cross will be very important in ensuring aid does reach those who need it and this can only happen if there are sufficient funds to keep the organisation prepared. The Waimarino Branch would welcome some help with the Annual Appeal. If you would like to help, please phone Nigel and Shelagh Buck on 385-8610 or contact the Secretary, Andre Moore on 385-8327.
