Scenic corridor idea studied
A plan to plant trees on road reserve land through the Ruapehu District to create a "scenic corridor" are to be further investigated before the council commits itself. The Ruapehu District Council voted to include $1000 in the 1995-96 annual plan for "specific site identification". | In his report to the council. property officer Alan Low said there was not "o.verall district-wide support" for the proposal. Some community boards supported it in principle but most wanted amendments, such as limiting the council's role to that of facilitator. Taumarunui ward members wanted the plan expanded to include private land. Councillors' comments at their February meeting included: funds needed for on-going maintenance were not identified (Cr Shaw); wattle was a good tree choice and a source of firewood (Cr Kirton); trees throwing shade on roads in Waiouru should be avoided because sunlight was needed to dry roads to prevent ice (Cr Vi ne) ; the original plan was to "encourage and facilitate" and not for the council to spend $300,000 as in the report (Cr Cosford).
