Fast track for short path stretch
Good news for Tainui Street pedestrians — the Ruapehu District Council plans to extend the new footpath to meet up with the existing path on the east side of the street (near the netball courts) — so they wont have to wait another 10 years for the rest. Council engineer Bruce Dobson said the council had been very fortunate with good competitive prices quoted for the work, meaning there was money left over for an extension of the path.
He said when the path was laid it was obvious that a planning oversight had been made and that it was logical to extend the path the extra 50 or so metres. Mr Dobson said the council budgeted to build a certain length of footpath each year and it was an easy planning mistake to make, when looking at plans which did not show existing paths and trying to analyse a mass of figures. "We get things 99.9 per cent right, but we do make mistakes sometimes," he said.
