A new Waiouru initiative is under way. A group of interested parties has banded together to look at starting up a van system for would-be party-goers . Co-opted spokesman for the group, Peter Pitts, said the object of the whole exercise is for people to leave their cars at home when going out. "We want to protect soldiers and civilians," said Mr Pitts. "The object is to first of all stop the cars going out of the driveway," he said.
Planning has been under way for about two weeks now and two meetings have been held so far. At the last meeting Mr Pitts said that the Waiouru business community gave the general okay, but wanted to know how the van plan will be implemented before giving their support. Mr Pitts is to draught a letter of intent on how the job is to be done. Financial backing is under way with the following business and organisations pledging support: Waiouru RSA-$3000, AGI-$3000, Oasis Hotel $3000, Waiouru Meat Mart-$400, Split Enz-$100, Spacies-$100 and Waiouru Bookshop-$50. Serco has also pledged $50 worth of petrol vouchers each month for the next 12 months.
