Waiouru to campaign for lower main street speed limit

Waiouru Community Board members have for a long time expressed concern about the position of the 70 kilometre speed sign at the north of the township and have recently decided to circulate a petition to gauge public opinion. Board members believe the sign does not provide enough warning for motorists to slow down for turning traffic, and want it moved a hundred or so metres further north. In addition board members want the speed limit reduced to 50 kilometres an hour, where the current 70km sign is, to enable school children to cross SH1 more safely. About 40 children, including pre-schoolers and their mothers and strollers, have to cross the road twice daily to get to and from school. Board member Kerry Harding said she believed the children crossing the road are an accident waiting to happen at the present speed limit.
A petition will be circulated around local businesses this week and board
members urge the public to sign it if they believe a change is needed.
