The Waiouru Community Board last week prioritised Waiouru council works for the 1995/96 Annual Plan, from submissions previously presented. These submissions were: (in priority order according to the board) • That a grant of $5000 be made to Waiouru Army library and a further grant of $5000 be made to Waiouru Army sport. • That the area outside the Waiouru public toilets be sealed at a cost of $9192. • That a further 50 metres of footpath be added to Ruanui Street at a cost of $3200, and • That stage one of the upgrading of the service lane and footpath between the Desert Inn and Ngauruhoe Street be undertaken at a projected cost of $7494. Community Board chairman Peter Pitts said prior to any work being done, land owners would be contacted to obtain their cooperation. The upgrading is broken up in to four
stages and the board anticipates including one stage in each of the next four financial years. Other matters The board also discussed the draft policy on roading improvement rates and asked the council to come back with a list of Waiouru roads to clarify what category each road fitted into. Major Kevin Ashcroft was co-opted onto the board bringing the Waiouru Community Board membership to six. Concern was expressed about the location of speed signs and the speed limit on SH1. (See separate story). Concern was also expressed that the turn-off from SH49 onto State Highway One was dangerous and had produced a number of accidents in the last few months. Transit New Zealand has been invited to attend the next board meeting as SH 1 and SH49 come under their jurisdiction. The next meeting will be held on 12 December in the school staffroom at 7.30pm.
