1994 ski season the longest ever

Spring skiing should carry on at Whakapapa until 4 December making the 1994 season the longest on record, said marketing manager Scott Lee yesterday.

Despite last week's heavy warm rain which washed away the Rockgarden mns there is still a 2.7 metre base on the upper field.

Mr Lee said while the weather had not been cooperative Whakapapa was recording up to 1000 skiers per day mid-week on the fine days.

'There' s still a lot of interest out there. Word seems to be out on how good the snow conditions are," he said. To celebrate the longest

season Ruapehu Alpine Lifts plans to offer free skiing on Monday 5 December. From that date the company will operate their summer lifts programme, plus one or two T-bars on fine days depending on snow conditions. Then the ski area will open again for a Summer Ski Season from Boxing Day until 8 January.
