Country women report
The half-yearly meeting of the Ruapehu Federation of Country Women' s Institutes was held recently at Raetihi and was attended by members from Central King Country, Oroua and Wanganui Federations. Ruapehu members from T aihape and Mangaweka were hosted by the local Raetihi Institute with moming tea to enable people to mix and view the competition and saies tables. The meeting was opened by Ruapehu District mayor Garrick Workman who spoke of his recent visit to Japan, explaining the importance of cleanliness there — bus drivers and some truck drivers wearing white gloves whilst driv'ng. He considered food prices to be very high but said he and his wife thoroughly enjoyed the visit. Club business followed, until the Raetihi School's bilingual and total immersion class showed their line dancing — deemed a very well presented item enjoyed by all. Institute grace was then said and lunch was served. The afternoon presentation was on family life in Manila. Dr Jo Ward, who has lived amongst the poor families there, had on display various embroidery articles made by these people for sale as the money she obtains from saies is returned to the people enabling them to improve their living and educational standards. The competitions were then judged by
