Fair go!

• I was amazed to hear that only one councillor has so far stood against subsidising the dog registrations from the general rate. Presumably the reason for subsidising dog registrations from the general rate was that the cost of dog control now necessitated the increase of dogregistrations which, according to the mayor, was not fair on farmers who used dogs as tools of trade. Many ratepayers in this district are retired, on benefits, or on limited incomes and find it difficult to raise the money to afford the

present level of rates without being asked to subsidise businesses. Farmingis abusiness and dog registrations are tax deductible for businesses, so also are rates, so why should people who cannot claim their rates as a business expense be asked to subsidise those who can!

Disgusted.
