Dog registration subsidy draws fire

• I would like to alert all ratepayers a recent newspaper article from a meeting held by the Ruapehu District Council's funding review committee, that "some members of the committee felt part of the dog registration fee should be subsidised from the general rate" and our Mayor Garrick Workman agrees with it. If this should happen, then I believe (and I stand to be corrected) that it could mean a 2 per cent increase in rates right across the board. This means all ratepayers, including pensioners, families, businesses, everyone - whether you have a dog or not. The only ones to miss this increase will be people, in rented

houses. This is a 'user pays' world now and those who have dogs should be paying enough to cover all costs. I choose not to have a dog and I am damned sure that I am not going to pay increased rates to subsidise dog owners. I call on all ratepayers to act now and object most strongly to Council as I have done in writing. Don't sit back and wait to see if it happens. If you do, it will be passed before Council and it will be too late to do anything about it. Object now.

Faith

Wise.
