Seddon Street spruce-up plan for 1995

Raetihi' s shopping area footpaths are to be repaved with concrete paving stones next year, from Ward to Duncan Street on the south side. The cost of the project is $41 ,000 with $24,000 having been allocated in ttie 1994-95 budgets, with the remainder to come from the 95-96 budget. All Waimarino Community Board members supported the use of paving stones for the footpath, but there was some debate on the timetable for it. Cr Bob Peck moved that a loan should be raised so that the whole job could be done at once. He said it would look 'appalling' to have half the path done at a time and that

it would be r air to have half the shops wait a year for their section to be done. The motion was lost, with members opposed to loading more onto ratepayers by way of servicing a loan. "This is one time when people will see something for their rates rather than funding other inefficient council activities," he said. "How about asking them if they want to do it?" Later, area engineer Don Sattler said the work could be programmed to straddle the two financial years. He said stage one of the work could start in April-May, then be completed in June-July, with only a short break in between.
