Finally farewells for Bosnia soldiers

Defence Minister Warren Cooper was on the defensive last week over Labour Party accusations that family and friends would be barred from the final farewell of troops to Bosnia. While there has not been any barring, it is reported that families have been requested to farewell their loved ones at some place other than the airport. Most Waiouru families spoken to by the Bulletin are ignoring this suggestion and will travel to Auckland to bid the soldiers goodbye. Mothers and children are used to saying goodbye from the door step, over the past

three months this has been the case with Waiouru soldiers spending the majority of their time in Linton. One mother even reported that her son thinks daddy has already been to Bosnia because he has been away so much. "Saying goodbye from here is just not final enough," said one partner. "If they see dad get on the plane they'll know that he's gone." The soldiers are expected to leave New Zealand late tomorrow night or early Thursday morning and will be based in Santici which is about 50 kilometres north west of Sarajevo.
