Far West T-Bar patience pays

Patience pays off when it comes to opening the Far West TBar for the winter ski season. That's the message from Lift Maintenance Supervisor, Steve McGill following a number of queries from skiers who looked up at all the snow in July and wondered why the Far West wasn't open. Steve says big ice-ups in the past have resulted in a decision not to open the T-bar until at least mid July. Atrocious weather during July further delayed installation of the cable which is checked and dismantled each season for safety reasons. Steve says working with heavy machinery in conditions which are often extreme because of the altitude and the exposed nature of the area can mean delays early in the season. The good news is that the Far West T-bar hasn't missed a beat - fingers crossed - since it opened on 1 August offering some of the best terrain on Mt Ruapehu for intermediate and advanced skiers.
