Horse rescue foiled

Just like dogs, horses found wandering at large may be impounded but there appears to be at least one owner who feels the law doesn't apply to him, said northern wards Dog Control Officer, Stan Dulieu, last week. Mr Dulieu said if this individual's horse is impounded, he by-passes all legalities and simply heads off in the hours of darkness to the stock pound with a pair of wire cutters. During the latest escapade a passing police patrol foiled the attempted illegal rescue but failed to catch the culprit. The horse was shifted to more secure pastures and was sold by auction last week after no-one was found to pay pound fees, he said. Impoundings up Mr Dulieu reported that the number of impoundings for the period 1 May to 12 August this year (59) is almost double those for same periods in 1993 (29) and 1992 (30). Of the 59 dogs impounded between May and August this year, 35 were males and 24 were bitches. Of Turn to Page 11
