Whanganui kayak race planned

The ECNZ Whanganui Descent, a kayak race to be held Saturday 1 October is becoming a classic marathon kayak race. Up to 120 paddlers are expected for the 56km event. The race begins at Taumarunui and includes a series of short rapids (watch out for no. 13 — Whakaturino which translated means "canoe in trouble") before the portage at Ohinepa (21km) Some paddlers will choose the shorter event option and finish their race at Ohinepa. For those carrying on to Whakahorothe remaining 35km is a series of flat water stretches broken by an occasional rapid. An attraction for the paddlers is that it takes in the first paddle (Ohinepa to Whakahoro) of the Mountains to Sea event, giving an excellent opportunity to get a long paddle in, with the safety and competition proved by having other paddlers around.
