Crater fo Lake challenge again
The fourth annual Crater to Lake Challenge is on this Saturday 20 August, with 81 teams and 19 individuals registered in the event. Competitors (who will be praying for fine weather) will kayak, water ski, mountain bike, road cycle, ski and run their way from Whakapapa Ski Area to the finish at the Great Lake Centre in Taupo. Start time is scheduled for 10am. Organiser Jill Glazewski said she is thrilled by the participation in this year's event. The Crater to Lake Challenge has steadily grown in popularity from its inception in 1990 when just a handful of competitors took part. Last year's entries numbered 48. One Waimarino team consists of GeorgeTaylor (mountain bike), Petra Spec (ski), Chris Thrupp (road bike), Charles Mareikura (kayak), Colin Budge (water ski) and Joe Taiaroa (run). The team is sponsored by the Ohakune Hotel, Junction Ski Shop and OTEC. Another local team, from the Skotel at Whakapapa, is led by Ian Arthurs. Athlete Chris Henderson from the Skotel has registered in the event as an individual. Competitors in the gruelling multi-sport event start at the Crater Lake at 10am, skiing to the Top O' the Bruce. They swap skis for mountain bikes at that point and bike to John McDonald Reserve before continuing on road bikes to the Tongariro River. Competitors water ski from Stump Bay Lake to Wharewaka Point, a distance of nearly 30km then run the remaining 7.5km to finish at the Great Lake Centre.
