Scouts head for US jamboree
Months of fund-raising payed off for a group of Waimarino scouts and venturers who left Ohakune on Saturday bound for two weeks in the United States. Included is one week' s stay at a venturers' summer . camp with thousands of American and foreign youngsters. The group of eight scouts
and venturers and four leaders spent Saturday night at San Jose University in San Francisco before mo ving on to Hi Sierra Summerr Camp on the edge of the Y osemite National Park. The remaining week will be spent in home stays with American Scout members. Ohakune Scouts Kelly Evans and Louisa Mackay-
Wood were responsible for breaking a few taboos, becoming the first female members ever allowed to attend what was, until now, traditionally an all-male domain. A highlight of the visit includes tickets to a San Francisco Giants baseball game, plus entry to San Francisco' s 'Great
America' theme park that has one of the world' sbiggest roller-coasters. The last stop will be in Los Angeles where the group will have the opportunity to shop and visit major attractions that include Knotts Berry Farm, Universal Studios and Disney land. Leader Grant Hays said
the group were involved in intensive fund-raising for the trip, which cost around $28,000. The youngsters were involved in a variety of fund-raising activities tht included pinus contorta eradication, section clearing, mowing lawns and distributing Ohakune' s christmas trees.
