Bridge
There were heaps of jnoans and groans at bridge on Wednesday 3 August when director Rita Kaiwhare ruled that the dealer of each hand must open one-no-trumps. The groans got louder through out the night as it became obvious that hands were not being seriously overbid and contracts were going light or in other cases
underbid when slams would have been obvious under normal bidding conditions. Top players for the evening with 49.5% were Ron Martin and Heather Cranston and sharing second place were Rita. " I though it was a good idea" Kaiwhare and Betty Hammond along with Ron Frew and Brian Eades on 47%. Fourth place went to Lauretta Eades and Pauline Le Noel on 40.5% and back in fifth place on 39/5% were Mark Hays and Bob Tumataroa. The scores for the evening were not adjusted for handicapping as having to open one-no-trump was a big enough handicap on its own. All players are looking forward to Rita's next novelty evening. (Not!)
