Turtle turns up after snoozing since summer
Whaea, the much-loved turtle resident of Ohakune Kindergarten, missing and presumed dead some four months ago, turned up safe and well last week. The transient turtle, fond of stretching its legs in the kindergarten enclosure on fine days, disappeared back in April. Head teacher Yvonne Trigell feared for her safety after frantic searches by staff, children and neighbours failed to find her. The services of ConstableTan Harrison's 'tracker' dog Jade were also employed, but to no avail. So it was with much amazement that Whaea was
spotted ambling about Ohakune Primary School' s adjoining playing field last week, by Play Group Supervisor Kerren Dixon. Believed to have been hibernating (possibly under the kindergarten), the turtle was sleepy but otherwise none the worse for her four month sabbatical. Ohakune Kindergarten staff are now appealing to inventive residents to come up with some form of turtle 'harness' , to enable Whaea to get her daily exercise without making another get-away. Design concepts may be forwarded to the Ohakune Kindergarten, c/o Yvonne Trigell.
