Ruapehu's volcanoes quiet-for now

The Central Plateau 's sleeping giants may be getting ready to wake up, according to results of a Taupo-based research centre. Ongoing studies by staff

of the Wairakei Research Centre revealed that last month the temperature of the Crater Lake rose 22 degrees Celcius to reach a maximum of 33 degrees, before dropping to 22 de-

grees. Results from the magnetic and ground deformation surveys indicate the long-established subsidence and cooling may be reversing, possibly leading to renewed activity. The centre usually records around 150 tremors a year in the TurangiTokaanu area, and a number have been recorded until July, although none larger than 3 .6 on" the richter scale.
