$5000 goal for artists

The exhibition of the 1 6th Annual Ohakune Art Awards will open on Sunday 4 September. Since its founding in 1978, the awards have grown in scope and stature and rank today as the most notable of the country's provincial art exhibitions. The show generates a wide interest with artists resident between Levin in the south and Hamilton in the north eligible to exhibit. Entries are invited in several categories: oil, watercolour, other medium and life study. A local award, open to all artists resident in the Ruapehu District and sponsored by the Ruapehu District Council, is also made. The young artist award has, in the past, attracted increasing interest and attention from seconday school, polytechnic and college of education students. Prize monies to the value of $5000 are made across the various categories with the 'Elizabeth Baigent Memorial Award' a generous $2000. Elizabeth, who was a long-time prime sponsor of the awards, passed away last year. Details of the 1994 exhibition and entry forms are available from the region's public libraries and The Convenor, Ellen Gould, 49B Arawa Street, Ohakune.
