Winning musicians

Taking part in the Instrumental section of the Wanganui Competitions on 2 July were five young Waimarino pianists: Steven & Matthew Bishop, Emma Forster, Nicola Leary and Nolana Marsh. It was the first time any of them had played in competitions and all said they enjoyed the experience. Competition was friendly and waiting backstage for their turn helped to focus attention on the music and their performance. Announcing their items clearly and confidently and playing the Opera House grand piano (a 9ft Steinway) with assurance, all can be proud of their performances, said their teacher Anne Greenwood. Classes of 12-14 meant widely differing experience and maturity in performance. The judge was Maureen Potter of Taupo. Results were: 9 & under 11. Steven Bishop - Very highly commended. Open class New Zealand Composer. Highly commended - solo no previous first place. Commended - solo modem or Jazz; Nicola Leary - Commended - solo no previous place. Commended - Modern or Jazz; Nolana Marsh - Very highly commended - modern or Jazz. 1 1 & under 13. Matthew Bishop - 2nd - solo no previous lst place. 3rd - open New Zealand composer.
