Classroom swapped for farm

Long-serving teacher Jeni Wiggins received an emotional farewell from the staff and pupils of Raetihi School at a special assembly last week.

Just hours later she was back in the classroom - but this time in a relieving capacity. Mrs Wiggins retires from teaching after more than 20

years as teacher at Raetihi School, during which time she has been involved at all levels of the curriculum - beginning as a reliever of senior school classes when her own children were young. She went on to teach new entrants and J1 classes for eight years, taking a special interest in teaching reading skills. Mrs Wiggins then became senior teacher of the middle syndicate, organising work schedules for standard two to standard four pupils. She was also very active in the many sporting activities undertaken by the school and was involved in organising inter-school sports, swimming and athletic competitions too numerous to mention. One such occasion involved organisation of over 500 pupils. Mrs Wiggin' s work with Raetihi School' s special needs pupils was another facet of her time with the school. A part-time position at the local veterinary clinic is well suited for her new vocation that involves helping on the family farm and developing her garden. where the hardy peony is an especial interest of hers. A welcome gift was that of a plant voucher presented to her by the PTA which will go a long way towards establishing a native shrub area. Another gift, from Mrs Wiggin' s "second family" - the staff of Raetihi School - presented her with a rimu

wall mirror that will take pride of place in the family home. Ties to the school have not been entirely severed. With gardens to tend and some bookworJc, Mrs Wiggins will still be a regular caller. As a member of the Raetihi School Centennary committee, she will also be very much involved with the organisation of that event that will see around 5000 past and present staff and pupils reuniting in 1996.
