Country singer visits Waiouru
The Waiouru community drop-in centre recently hosted Florence Phillips, a 12-year old country singer from Palmerston North. Miss Phillips agreed to perform in Waiouru as part of the centre' s mid-term break activities. The country singer entertained her audience with a mixture of gospel songs and old favourites. She also displayed her considerable yodelling talents. "She' s been doing that since she was eight," said her father Bob Phillips. Miss Phillips has won an impressive array of awards including the senior yodelling section at the Nelson country music awards, although she is still a junior. She has also won the country music gold guitar awards. Miss Phillips has sung in front of crowds as large as 1600 and has just finished a tour of the main centres with the Douglas Wright dance company. Mr Phillips said his daughter' s next career step would probably involve travelling through Europe and Switzerland. "We've had an offer. There' s nothing left in New Zealand for her. We've run out of places to go."
