Access to the Ohakune and Raetihi rubbish dumps is to be restricted, following failed attempts to stop people lighting fires at the dumps. The gates to the dumps will in future be locked between 5.30pm and 7.30am, except for daylight saving times when access will be closed from 7.00pm and 7.30am. "This is absolutely essential," said Ellen Gould, Waimarino Community Board member, at their July meeting

where they approved the move. "The smoke is a health hazard, especially at the marae when there are children playing outside." On the question of winter visitors dumping rubbish, and using street bins for household rubbish, area engineer Don Sattler said the council had considered providing holding pens in town, but they ran into difficulties with the Resource Management Act. "And people want them but they don't want them next to their house," said Mr Sattler.
