ADVERTORIAL Making financial planning fit your aims By Warwick Funnell, Wanganui Investment Brokers The merry-go-round of finances seems too often to leave us bamboozled. A baffling norm sees us buy an insurance policy and stick it in the cupboard. In a lot of cases people have been given a straight mathematical answer to a problem and advisers haven't taken an overall approach to their client's problems. For example, it's not much use telling a business person whose marriage is falling apart that they should produce more, when they are pre-occupied with the thought "the more I produce the more I will have to divide". It is of little use to devise an elaborate plan to settle all a client's property into a trust if all they want to do is enjoy spending the lot while they are alive. Sometimes clients have a simple need to find out what their existing assets, insurance and superannuation will really do for them in later years. This is where financial planning comes in. Financial planners take an unbiased professional look at the whole picture and work out an overall solution. They will help you to use your time and money by showing you how to be well versed on your situation and how to make informed decisions when dealing with specific assistance from other professionals. I have been listening to people and helping them meet their financial challenges since 1976. Financial planning is a matter of really listening to people, finding out what they want to achieve and why, and then setting out to tailor solutions to achieve their goals. Over the next few weeks I will be introducing you to some of these challenges and how, with a little help, you can once again be in control of your financial future.
