"Animal-like behaviour"
Francis Anthony Henare, 21, bushman of Raetihi, pleaded guilty after a charge of assaulting a female was changed to one of common assault which took place in Queen Street, Raetihi, on 10 May. He was also charged with earlier breaching a sentence of periodic detention in Wanganui. When details of the assault charge (which included biting) were read out Judge Watson described this as "uncivilised almost animal-like behaviour" and added: "It never ceases to surprise me at the degree of violence that occurs in a relationship that should be one of love and caring for each other." Henare was convicted and sentenced to 200 hours community service (the maximum) as well as being fined $400 plus court costs of $95 on the assault charge. A concurrent sentence of 200 hours community service was imposed on the charge of breaching periodic detention.
