Standby wants more
Eight people attended last week' s annual general meeting of Standby, held in Raetihi. Although the positions of president, secretary and treasurer were filled, the Standby organisation would like to see more people taking on committee responsibilities and would welcome new members. Election of officers: president, J. Griffiths; treasurer, C. Owens; secretary J. Mosen; booking officers D. Scarrow, J. Mosen; committee, J. Fraser, J. Ranginui, S. McDonough. Standby was established in the Waimarino in 1990, to assist if there should be an emergency in the home. When a call for help is received, a helper is made available to ease the strain on the family. If a mother is under stress for any reason, or may have to go to hospital suddenly, help is available. Standby helpers are caring, sympathetic people who have families themselves and realise that being a parent is hard work. They also realise that it is important for the mother to have support when needed, to help them keep on top of the situation. For the elderly who may no longer be able to do certain jobs or need extra help, Standby is also available to them. When a person is ill or has just come out of hospital, a Standby helper is available to do light household duties in the home. Anyone needing help can phone the Standby booking officer or have their doctor, Plunket nurse or public health nurse make arrangements for them.
