Sports trust needs new members

A lack of public support for the recent meeting of the Waimarino Community Sports, Education and Development Trust, (WCSE & DT) has meant that the Trust' s original board of trustees will continue until volunteers are forthcoming. The Trust reviewed its three years of operation at last month's public meeting, held on 8 June. During this time the Trust has distributed $30,000 in grants in the Waimarino area. The WCSE & DT has assisted many local sportspeople and groups, including skier Patrick Cooper and track athlete Charmian Oh. Over the wider Waimarino area grants have been awarded to the Waiouru Softball Club, the Whakapapa Gym Club, Turoa Tumblers and the Northern Junior Rugby Board. Trust members appreciate feedback from those who receive grants. Charmian Oh, a Ruapehu College pupil, wrote a note of thanks after her recent visit to Australia to compete at the secondary schools' athletic championships. Charmian mentioned how she had met Lynford Christie when the English athletic team trained with the New Zealand team for the duration.

The Trust' s weekly lottery draw needs more support and the easiest way to be sure of regular participation is to have the money paid by automatic payments. The cost is $100 per year, or $2 payable weekly. A total of $495 is paid out on a weekly basis: $400 to the winning number, $25 for each number either side, and the number in reverse, and $10 for two numbers on either side of the winning number. Local winners include Glen Journeaux (twice, a boost for a varsity student); Robyn Olds, Mark McCarthy and Ellen Gould. Minor

prizewinners also include Lee Crawshaw who has collected three times to date. Tickets and application forms are available on enquiry from the Trustees: Garrick Workman, Cathy McLean, Clive Fremlin, Glyn Hubbard, Joe Paurini, Neville Johnson, Nicki Williams, Chrissy Simmen and Keitha Journeaux. The Trustees urge members holding tickets to renew them, and encourage those who want to further the physical and mental wellbeing of sportspeople and children in the Waimarino to participate.
