Ruapehu visitors monitored
From 1 July 1994, the number of domestic and international visitors to the Ruapehu District Council will be monitored as part of a Visitor Monitor Programme. "The Monitor will be an invaluable tool for the Ruapehu District", said Ruapehu District Council marketing manager Bruce Rollinson. "For the first time we will have timely, comprehensive results on the size and origin of the visitor market to the district, and will be able to assess the effectivenmess of our marketing activities. The monitor will provide useful feedback for the tourism industry." Over time the monitor will show trends in the numbers of visitors to the district, changes in particular geographic markets and the types of accommodation being used by visitors, he said. The results of the monitor will be published monthly.
Architects Planners Resource Managers Ltd (APR Consultants) have been commissioned by the Ruapehu District Council to develop and implement the Visitor Monitor Programme. Those businesses that provide accommodation will be contacted by APR for their involvement in the programme. A random selection of households in the district will be telephoned to determine the number of visitors who stay in private accommodation. The project is jointly funded by Ruapehu District Council and the NZ Tourism Board and is co-ordinated by RDC. Similar programmes have operated in Rotorua, Queenstown and Dunedin for some time and recently have commenced in Auckland, Taranaki, Waikato, Coromandel, Taupo, Eastem Bay of Plenty, Hawkes Bay, Eastland and other regions around New Zealand.
