Preparedness key to survival with Ruapehu extremes

The Department of Conservation is once again reminding mountain-goers to 'Be Prepared' when venturing onto the slopes and into the back country this winter. Education officer at the Whakapapa Field Centre, Yvonna Chrzanowski, warned about the dramatic extremes of weather experienced in the Central Plateau region that can occur at any time. An essential gear list for high altitude trips, whether venturing above the snow line or into the back country, includes the following: waterproof jacket and overtrousers; warm woollen or pile clothing; strong tramping boots or shoes; food and drink; first aid kit; snow goggles; woollen hat; ice axe and crampons; snow gaiters; snow goggles. Other items that should be considered

are: map and compass (know how to use them); avalanche transceiver; snow shovel; avalanche probe. Avalanche awareness After snow falls the possibility of avalanche activity is high and visitors are reminded to obtain up-to-date and accurate information before travelling in avalancheprone areas. Such information can be obtained from Whakapapa Field Centre and Ruapehu Alpine Lifts who combine to provide daily comprehensive ski field and back-country avalanche reports. Advising someone of your intentions is tantamount to venturing into the Tongariro National Park. Checking in with that person at the end of the activity is equally important.
