Pupils perform well at speech competition

Opunake High School was the venue for the regional Whanganui Taranaki secondary schools' 'Nga Manu Korero' speech competitions, held on Friday 10 June. Four Ruapehu College pupils competed in the annual competition and performed exceptionally well. Rebecca Clarke who competed in the SirTuri Carroll junior English section, and Lance Jones in the Korimako senior English section performed with credit to the school although were unplaced.

A whina Kingi who competed in the Rawhiti Ihaka junior Maori section and Che Wilson in the Pei Te Hurinui Jones senior Maori section both gained first placings. The pair will go on to represent Ruapehu College and the Whanganui Taranaki region at the Nationals in Christchurch in August. A group of 45 pupils and supporters will leave for Te Waipounamu on Tuesday 16 August. This is the second time pupils from Ruapehu College have won both Maori sections, and the third consecutive time for Che Wilson to win the Pei Te Hurinui Jones trophy.
