Vietnam reunion

Queen's Birthday weekend this year not only coincided with the commemoration of the D-Day landings in Normandy 50 years ago, it also marked

the 8th National Reunion of New Zealand' s Vietnam Veterans. About 400-500 former New Zealand servicemen who had seen action in Vietnam - together with their partners - attended a 3-day reunion in New Plymouth over Queen's Birthday weekend. They gathered from all over New Zealand as well as from Australia, Canada and the United States to attend this now well-es-tablished reunion which is held every two years in different parts of the country. This year's reunion saw six Vietnam veterans from Waiouru travel to New Plymouth on Friday 3 June and return on Monday 6 June. They wereWillie Walker (VI), Colin Drylie (W3), Garry Haughey (Vi), Mike McGuish (V5), Juju Rukapo (Wl) with wife ' Shirley and Peter Harris (W3) with wife Ann. The weekend events included a memorial parade and service at the Cenotaph accompanied by the New Plymouth City Brass Band. Among the social eventswere a fund-raising 'Kangaroo Court', the launch of a book by Colin Smith about the role of New Zealand infantry in the Vietnam conflict, as well as many opportunities for recollections and reminiscences.
